Dmitry Malikov The Russian composer, pianist, producer and singer
The honored artist of Russia, the laureate of the Russian and international festivals and competitions
Dmitry Malikov was born in Moscow on January 29, 1970. His father, Yuriy Malikov, is the honored artist of Russia, the founder and artistic leader of the band (vocal instrumental music group) “Samotsvety”. His mother, Lyudmila Vyunkova, used to be a ballet dancer. In 1970 two important events happened in the life of Yuriy Malikov, first was the birth of his son Dmitry and the second was the creation of the band “Samotsvety”. Fate has given Dmitry Malikov a unique chance to join the world of music since his childhood. His parents enjoyed nation-wide popularity. Famous musicians visited their house and since his childhood Dima has been growing up in a creative atmosphere. Instead of lull songs Dima’s grandmother used to turn on the music of “Samotsvety” and at the age of 2 Dima would put on the headphones and listen to “The Beatles”. In his childhood Dmitry Malikov dreamt of being an ice-hockey player but at five he started taking classes of piano at a musical school and his parents took him along when they went on tours.
The first performances of Malikov as a pianist were at school concerts. At the age of 14 he composed his first song called “Iron soul”. At that very moment he forgot about his dream to be a sportsman. The piano has become his second nature. In 1985 Dmitry Malikov after completing the 8th form of the secondary school entered in the specialized music school attached to the Moscow conservatory. At the same time he made his first steps on a musical stage, where he played key instruments in the band ''Samocvety''. Even at that time the songs of the young composer were in the repertoire of the band and the jazz singer Larisa Dolina. The TV debut of Dmitry was in 1986 in the program ''Wide Circle''. The first performance of Dmitry Malikov on a ''big stage'' with the song ''The Moon Dream'' and ''You will never be mine'' was held on the 25 of June in 1988 in Gorky park. The songs have become very popular among young people and were in different charts. The song ''The Moon Dream'' has become the leader of the most famous hit-parade of that time ''The Sound Track'' and stayed in the records of hits the whole year. In the ''New Year Light'' in 1989 Dmitry launched his new song ''See you tomorrow ''. This song even now is regarded as his ''visiting card'' and traditionally concludes the concert performances. The essence of Dmitry musical creative work is expressed in this song - beautiful melody, is carefully arranged and contains a light-hearted optimistic text.
After this song was released in the Soviet Union Dmitry Malikov has become very famous. His songs were at the head of the leading hit-parades of the country. The performances of Dmitry Malikov have gathered full concert halls and stadiums, he has acquired a tremendous number of fans all over the country, who were crazy about him. The number of fan clubs in Russia was estimated at hundreds. But he confessed that unexpected success had failed to turn his head. That’s why after his graduation from the musical school in 1989 Dmitry entered the piano department of the Moscow State Conservatory named after Chaikovskiy. Dmitry didn’t go away from the big stage, he combined the classes at the conservatory with musical tours. The classical education has become the background on which all his creative work is being built now. In the summer of 1989 Dmitry Malikov was invited to the international festival of popular music in Sopot as a guest of honor. Commenting on the popularity of the singer and the wide interest in his creative work, the newspaper “Sopot News” wrote: “Dmitry Malikov - is a professional in a kind of music that is listened to with pleasure at discos in Europe”.
The first solo concerts took place in Moscow in the “Olimpyskiy” hall, that houses 18000 spectators. In 1993 the composer and singer Dmitriy Malikov made his debut as a film actor, he played the role of a pianist, a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory in the film “To see Paris and die”, the director was Alexander Proshkin. At the same time in Germany a single “Don’t be afraid” was released (the “Coconut” sound record). It was performed by a duet called “Baroque”, consisting of the Afro-singer Oscar and Dmitry Malikov. Their duet, where Malikov was a composer, arranger and pianist, was invited several times to take part in the TV musical program in Germany. In 1994 Dmitry Malikov graduated with honor from the Moscow Conservatory, simultaneously, he released his first collection of hits “See you tomorrow” and recorded a new concept album “Come to me”. It is remarkable that Dmitry Malikov included in his album two instrumental compositions besides the songs, thereby he emphasized that he had reached a new stage in his creative search. In the album “100 nights” of 1996 Dmitry Malikov once again showed his aspiration to be a stylish singer but creating the hits he used rich classical and folk material. Alongside, with the career of a pop singer Dmitry Malikov found time for classical music and for piano classes. Spectators were able to appreciate his performance skill as a pianist in 1995 in the program “Paradise-cocktail”, where he performed the piano concert of Ference conducted by Konstantin Kremer. In 1997 Malikov’s piano concerts took place in Stuttgart. In the spring of 1997 he at last fulfilled his long-cherished dream to release an album of his instrumental music, that was named “Fear of Flying”. This serious orchestra-symphonic album showed one more feature of Dmitry Malikov’ talent. In 2001 the “Universal Music” released his second instrumental album “Game”, which included piano handling of Russian pop songs. Instrumental compositions of Dmitry Malikov can be heard in TV programs and they have been used as soundtracks in some documentary films. Lately the album “Fear of Flying” has been released for the second time, which proves the popularity of instrumental music in Russia. Dmitry Malikov is planning to continue working on instrumental music and compose music for theater and cinema.
The pop career of Dmitry Malikov is also successful at this time. In his songs that were included in the album “My far away star” new motives appeared, they contain more soul lyric and even irony run through this album. In 2000 the album “Beads” was released. Malikov’s famous hit “Happy birthday, Mama” was included in the album. It significantly expanded the age frames of his listeners. In 2002 a new song album “Love story” was released, that became the eight and so far the latest solo project. But collections of the best songs of Dmitry Malikov that remain popular among listeners of different age constantly appear on sale. In 2000 Dmitriy Malikov came out as a producer of the popular dance project “Plazma”.
Videoclips play an important role in Dmitry Malikov’s creative work. Many clips have already become the classics of the Russian clip-making art. Altogether in the videography of Dmity Malikov there are more than 20 videoclips, part of which was made by the famous Russian clipmakers. Dmitry Malikov always wants to experiment in his works. It can be even seen in his clips, some of them were made by the editor-in-chief of the magazine and the photographer. The clips “I will drain my glass” and “My far away star” were acknowledged as laureates of the Russian festival of videoclips “Generation”. In the last decade Dmitriy Malikov has repeatedly became laureate of the TV festival “The song of the year”. In 1995 in Monte Carlo at “The World Music Awards” Dmitry Malikov was awarded in the category “World best-selling recording-artist of the year”. On the 22nd of November by the decree of the President Dmitry Malikov was awarded a title “The honored artist of Russia”. Dmitry Malikov is a holder of the national premium “Gold gramophone” of the radio music station “Russian radio” (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003), the premia “Hundert puds” of the radio “Hit –FM” (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003). Dmitry Malikov – is the laureate of the national premium “Ovation” in the nomination “For intellectual contribution to the development of the music for youth” (2000). Dmitry Malikov’s sister Inna, is the graduate of the dramatic department of the Russian Academy of Dramatic Art (GITIS). Dmitry Malikov is married, his wife’s name is Helen. In 2000 their daughter Stefania was born. Dmitry Malikov lives and works in Moscow.
